City Central is an initiative of Marian Counihan together with Eva Magnusková, art historian and cultural programmer, and is realised in partnership with the Akkoord of Groningen.

North South Lines

North South lines is a public event series design to open up discourse and facilitate exchange between African and European contexts on topics in contemporary culture…

We are interested in how postcolonial narratives and identities play out in a transnational context, particularly in the arts sector, and how this relates to social movements on one hand, and institutions on the other. We aim particularly to disrupt the often oppositional framing in discourses with or about Africa in the European context.

North South Lines is an initative of Marian Counihan (maieutic research and project bureau), Margriet van der Waal (Professor South African Literary Studies, Culture and History, UvA), and Jesse van Amelsfoort (Cultural theorist, RUG).

Our first event was held at the Rijksuniversiteit Groningen in May 2017, entitled “Narratives of Hope? Curating Africa in the European Context”.
