The word maieutic (ma-yew-tic) derives from the Greek word for midwife. It is used to describe the Socratic method of eliciting knowledge through reflective interaction, thereby ‘giving birth’ to new insights and concepts. This is how I see my work: enquiring, reading/listening, analysing, and bringing forth.

Maieutic ~ philosopher-midwife ~ Marian Counihan

I am a South African, a woman, a philosopher, a would-be sociologist, a mother, a migrant/expat, an aspiring sailor.

In my work I am interested in how people relate to the cities they live in, and how we can improve this. I am particularly interested in how this plays out in in the context of migration-related diversity.
